Chlorine dioxide became a practical tool for combating periodontal disease when world famous periodontist, Perry Ratcliff developed a means for dissolving it in a toothpaste and an oral rinse. Chlorine dioxide is effectively anti-bacterial, anti viral and anti-fungal. The O2 in CLO2 effectively oxidizes the H2S and CH2SH turning them into harmless SO2 and H20. Each day, the skin tissue of the gums, which contains sulfur dies and is replaced by new tissue.
